Google is reportedly planning to develop a dedicated YouTube app for the Apple Vision Pro, according to a new report by The Verge.
Google Is Planning To Get A Dedicated YouTube Vision Pro App
For those unaware, in January, YouTube announced that it is not developing any specialized apps for Apple’s new Vision Pro headset, nor will they allow their iPad apps to run on the hardware.
However, after Apple launched its new mixed reality headset, Vision Pro, last Friday (February 2, 2024), YouTube has now announced that it is “excited” by Apple’s Vision Pro launch and that a dedicated YouTube app for the headset is on the company’s “roadmap.”
“We’re excited to see Vision Pro launch and we’re supporting it by ensuring YouTube users have a great experience in Safari. We do not have any specific plans to share at this time, but can confirm that a Vision Pro app is on our roadmap,” YouTube spokesperson Jessica Gibby said in a statement to The Verge.
The above announcement confirms that the app is still in development, and the company wants to ensure that YouTube users have a great experience with Safari. Until the app is released, the company will continue supporting the browser-based version, and it recommends that Apple Vision Pro users visit YouTube via the Safari browser to utilize the platform.
As pointed out by The Verge, a confirmed release date has yet to be provided for such an app, nor has YouTube suggested if its 360 and VR (virtual reality) video library would work on Vision Pro.
When Apple was asked if the current YouTube 360 and 3D video would be supported on YouTube, an Apple spokesperson, Jackie Roy, stated the quality of that content was inadequate.
“Much of this content was created for devices that do not deliver a high-quality spatial experience. In some cases, this content could also cause motion discomfort. We’ve focused our efforts on delivering the best spatial media experience possible including spatial photos and videos, Apple Immersive Video, and 3D movies available on Apple TV.”
